Swedish Christmas.

Swedish Christmas. Terri Persson and Emanuele Gigliuti will be staying in Sweden during Christmas.

Christmas a long way from home

Darkness prevails in Umeå and Christmas is coming.
- Sun and a more relaxed atmosphere would be my two gifts to Sweden from my country, says Emanuele Gigliuti from Italy, who studies political science. He is one of the foreign students that will be staying in Umeå over Christmas. Most of them are exchange students here for one year.

- I am going to miss my family, my dog, and cutting down the Christmas tree. The postive side is that I can experience a Swedish Christmas, says Terri Persson from Canada who studies biology. She feels that staying in Sweden during Christmas can turn out to be rewarding, since her new years resolution is to learn Swedish. Truth is that almost all of the exchange students here wish to learn Swedish before returning to their homeland.

White Christmas
Giorgio Ferdinandi from Italy studies political science here in Umeå. Back home there is snow in the Alps - not much in the city he lives in, Turin, but he certainly hopes it will be snow in Umeå during Christmas.
- To me Christmas is more than a vacation, and a reason to party. I believe that Christmas should be a time of reflection for all the things that we have, and a time to give to the needy. It is imporatant to have fun, but also to reflect on how lucky we all are, says Giorgio. For Terri money is a one of the reasons why she can´t go home.
- But I feel that it will be okay since my sister will be coming to Sweden. I will spend Christmas in Stockholm, but I don´t think that I can compare this to being back home. Giorgio and Emanuele, on the other hand, don´t wish to go home since they would like to experience a Swedish Christmas and learn about the Swedish culture. Emanuele hopes to go to church on Christmas day and then have a big lunch with his friends that will be here in Umeå over the holidays. - I really like "potatis sallad" and I think that it is very Swedish. Most of all, though, I hope that there is lots of snow.

Sankta Lucia in Sweden
Coming from Italy Giorgio knows about Lucia. He thinks it would be nice to see how they celebrate it here, but the confusing thing to him is why Christmas is celebrated on the 24th of December.
- I think that is weird, because back home we celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. Terri says that an important souvenir from Sweden would be surströmming!
- I guess it would be a good souvenir since you probably can´t buy it anywhere else in the world! I will also take home lots of knäckebröd, since you can´t get it in Canada. Many foreign students feel that their experience here has been exciting and rewarding, but that not going home for the holidays will be tough. What will your Christmas be like?
